Lesotho Travel Information Guide: Politics · Safety · Health · Travel Information Summary

Lesotho is a landlocked kingdom surrounded by South Africa, a unique travel destination where the entire country consists of mountainous terrain over 1,000 meters above sea level. The population is almost entirely Basotho, creating a society with a highly homogeneous ethnic structure. While the government has maintained a relatively stable political system recently, high poverty and unemployment rates mean fundamental security issues haven't been fully resolved.

Lesotho Travel Information

1. Country Overview

Lesotho, officially known as the “Kingdom of Lesotho,” is completely surrounded by South Africa, giving it the characteristic of a landlocked island nation. The population is overwhelmingly Basotho (approximately 99.7%), making it a country with strong ethnic homogeneity. The terrain is predominantly mountainous, offering the appeal of high-altitude travel but requiring caution regarding mobility and security. While the recent security situation has improved compared to the past, the most common threats to travelers are opportunistic crimes like pickpocketing or theft of bags and mobile phones.

2. Key Risk Factors

Political Risk

Lesotho is a democratic constitutional monarchy. The King serves a symbolic role, with the Prime Minister and Parliament holding the actual power. In the October 2022 general election, the RFP party led by Prime Minister Sam Matekane won and formed a coalition government. However, socio-economic pressures, such as economic performance and unemployment rates, persist, leaving the possibility of political discontent or protests open.

Terrorism and Security Threats

While there are currently few clear-cut terrorist organizations or instances of terrorist attacks, making it difficult to classify the terrorism risk as very high, the relatively open borders mean potential threats cannot be entirely ruled out. Even if minimal, a “high alert” level is appropriate.

Lesotho Travel Information

Crime

The primary concern for travelers is crime. Petty theft and opportunistic crimes are common nationwide, and foreigners, perceived as wealthy, can be targets for theft, especially in the capital, Maseru. Even armed robberies and carjackings have been reported.

Police presence and security infrastructure are limited, meaning emergency response may not be swift.

Medical Care & Health

Lesotho's medical facilities fall significantly short of Western standards. While basic treatment is available, emergencies or specialized care may require travel to neighboring South Africa. Vaccinations and hygiene management are crucial, as exposure to some waterborne and foodborne diseases is possible.

3. Travel-Related Culture and Regulations

  • Due to the mountainous terrain and high-altitude climate, hiking, trekking, and nature exploration are popular activities. However, caution is advised as vehicle and road conditions during travel can be poor.
  • Considering the risk of crime and theft, it is advisable to avoid walking alone late at night. Areas outside Maseru and deserted roads are particularly high-risk.
  • For LGBTQ+ travelers, as full legal protection is not guaranteed, it is advisable to refrain from public displays of affection.
  • Always keep copies of important documents like your passport, visa, and accommodation address, and minimize exposure of valuables for safety.

4. Emergency Contacts

  • Police: 10111
  • Ambulance: 10177
  • Fire Department: 998 / 999
